Conditions / Toenails
Toenail problems
An ingrown, thickened, or discoloured nail — or nails that have simply become difficult to cut safely at home. Small things, until they’re not.
You don’t need anything complicated to deserve relief, and you don’t need to have “let it go too far” to book in.
What’s actually happening
Ingrown toenails often keep coming back because of the nail’s natural shape or curve, footwear that’s too tight, or the way a nail has previously been cut — trimming too short or rounding the corners can encourage the nail to dig into the skin as it regrows. Thickened or discoloured nails are frequently fungal, which thrives in warm, enclosed shoes. Knowing which one you’re dealing with is what decides the right treatment — so an assessment comes first.
When an ingrown nail becomes a recurring pattern rather than a one-off, ongoing soaking and trimming tends to manage the symptoms without addressing why it keeps happening. A straightforward in-clinic procedure under local anaesthetic is one option we can talk through — “surgery” sounds daunting, but this isn’t.
It’s worth booking in if the same nail keeps becoming ingrown despite home care, a nail has become painful, discoloured or infected-looking, or cutting your own nails has become physically difficult. None of these need to reach “unbearable” first.
