Shockwave therapy
For some stubborn heel and tendon problems that haven’t settled with the usual approaches, shockwave therapy can be a useful next step.
Shockwave therapy delivers focused pulses of energy to an area of persistent pain, which can help stimulate the body’s own repair response. We use it selectively — for particular problems, where the evidence supports it, and usually after other approaches have been given a fair go.
What it’s used for
It’s most often considered for longer-standing conditions like plantar heel pain (plantar fasciitis) and some Achilles and other tendon problems that have been grumbling on for months. It isn’t a first step, and it isn’t suitable for everyone — which is why it always starts with an assessment rather than the machine.
It’s usually considered when pain has persisted for several months despite sensible load management, footwear changes and other treatment — not as the first thing to try.
How we can help
- Assess whether shockwave is appropriate for your specific problem — and tell you honestly if we don’t think it’s likely to help
- Explain what the treatment feels like beforehand — it can be briefly uncomfortable, and each session is short
- Deliver a planned course of treatment alongside a loading or strength program, not on its own
- Review how you’re responding and adjust the plan as we go
Not right for everyone. Shockwave isn’t suitable in some situations — for example during pregnancy, over certain areas, or with particular medical conditions. We’ll check this with you before starting.
